Privacy policy
Your kitchen.
Your records.
Kitchen Margin is developed by Norman Zeng. This policy covers the Kitchen Margin app and this support website.

At a glance
Your restaurant records and text recognition stay on your device. Kitchen Margin does not send that data to a developer backend and has no advertising, tracking, or third-party analytics SDKs. Apple processes subscriptions. You decide when to export or share files.
The app also offers an optional “Share usage diagnostics” export in Settings → About: feature-use counts, event and installation timestamps, capture timings, coarse library-size ranges, and the app version, with no names, prices, photos, kitchen content, or direct identifiers. Nothing is sent automatically — you choose whether and where to share that file.
1. Information stored in the app
The app stores the information you enter or capture, including ingredients, recipes, prices, yields, allergen information, notes, production plans, sales and purchasing records, source images, recognized text, history, and settings. These records are kept locally on your device.
Text recognition uses Apple’s on-device technology. Source photos and recognized text are not uploaded to Norman Zeng or to a developer-operated recognition service. Kitchen Margin does not require a developer account or provide a developer-hosted database.
2. Permissions
Camera permission lets you photograph documents. The photo picker provides the images you choose for capture. The app uses those images to recognize text and retain the source with your records. You can manage permissions in your device’s Settings.
Optional Google Sheets import
Google Sheets import is an optional Capture feature currently available only to the approved owner test account. When you choose it, Google signs you in through its system authorization screen. Google asks for read-only permission to view all your Google Sheets spreadsheets. Kitchen Margin requests only the workbook link you enter and the worksheet you select. It does not list your Drive files, change your spreadsheet, or sync changes in the background.
The app sends Google the sign-in request and the spreadsheet identifier needed to read your selected worksheet. Google processes these requests under its privacy policy. The app keeps a short-lived access token in memory during the import screen; it does not store a refresh token or send tokens or sheet contents to the developer. Disconnect Google clears the app's access token. You can also revoke the app's permission in your Google Account settings.
Only ingredient purchase details you review and import become local kitchen records. Imported prices are current ingredient prices, not historical invoices or purchase totals. The app remembers column numbers tied to a hash of the sheet, tab and headings on this device to reduce repeat mapping; it does not keep the original sheet contents in those preferences. Imported records follow the retention and deletion rules below.
Kitchen Margin's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google data is used only to provide the import you request, and is not used for advertising, sold, or used to train AI models.
3. Subscriptions and Apple services
Kitchen Margin uses Apple StoreKit for subscriptions. Apple processes purchases, payment details, receipts, and transaction information under its own terms and privacy policy. The app receives subscription and transaction status from Apple to determine access to Capture features. The developer does not receive your payment card details and does not operate a subscription verification server.
Apple may separately process App Store usage, diagnostics, device backup, and account information according to your Apple settings and Apple’s policies. The app has no developer-operated analytics or crash-reporting service.
4. Exports, sharing, and device backups
You can choose to export complete backups, CSV files, and other outputs using system sharing tools. Exports may contain sensitive restaurant information, source photos, and personal information present in those photos. The destinations and people you choose may receive those files and handle them under their own policies.
Apple device backups may include app data depending on your backup settings. Kitchen Margin does not automatically sync your kitchen between devices or provide its own cloud backup. A subscription does not change that.
5. Retention and deletion
The app retains your kitchen data on the device until you remove it. Archiving a document keeps it available for history and restoration; archiving is not permanent deletion. Some deleted or replaced records may remain in historical snapshots or recovery copies stored by the app.
Deleting the app removes its local app data. To remove other copies, also delete any exported files, shared copies, and backups from the locations where they were saved, including Apple backups as appropriate. The developer cannot access or erase copies held on your device or in destinations you selected.
Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Manage or cancel it through Apple’s subscription settings.
6. Support and this website
This static website is hosted by GitHub Pages. It has no developer-added analytics, advertising, tracking scripts, or cookies. GitHub may process technical request information, including IP addresses, to host and secure the service, as described in the GitHub Privacy Statement.
If you choose to email kitchenmargin.support@proton.me, the developer receives your email address and message contents to respond to your request. The app’s optional “Share usage diagnostics” export (Settings → About) produces a file with feature-use counts, event and installation timestamps, capture timings, time since last capture, coarse library-size ranges, and the app version. It contains no names, prices, photos, kitchen content, or direct identifiers. If you attach that file to support email, the developer receives the report and can associate it with your email address; it is not anonymous in that context. Nothing is ever sent automatically. Support email is handled through Proton Mail under the Proton Privacy Policy. We keep correspondence as needed to resolve and follow up on your request; you can request deletion by emailing the same address. Avoid sending sensitive records, and redact any information that is not needed to explain the issue.
If you choose to contact support through a GitHub issue, your GitHub username and everything you post are visible to the developer and to the public. We use that information to understand and respond to your request. Do not submit invoices, receipts, sales reports, backups, private business data, personal information, or payment information. Use fictional examples.
Public support discussions may remain available as a support record. You can edit your own issue content where GitHub permits, or request removal of a support post through the same support channel without reposting sensitive content. GitHub controls its own retention, account data, and platform copies under its policy.
7. Changes and contact
We will update this page when the app’s data practices change and show the effective date above. For questions about this policy, email kitchenmargin.support@proton.me. Do not include private records that are not needed for your question.
App use is governed by Apple’s standard End User License Agreement.
